GENRE
Cinematic Opera

This innovative film adaptation of Gordon Getty’s opera Plump Jack portrays the boisterous Sir John Falstaff and his complex, profoundly human friendship with Prince Hal. The composer’s libretto, which was crafted from Henry IV, Part 1, Henry IV, Part 2, and Henry V, follows the antics of Plump Jack (Falstaff) leading up to Hal’s evolution into the newly-crowned King Henry V.

Directed by Martin Guigui and conducted by Nicole Paiement, the opera’s large cast stars baritone Lester Lynch in the title role of Falstaff. Also featured are tenor Nathan Granner, soprano Melody Moore, soprano Leslie Katter, bass-baritone Kevin Short, baritone Eugene Brancoveanu, and bass Matt Boehler.

Getty writes in his composer’s notes, “Taking my cue from the plays, I wanted Plump Jack to be bursting at the seams, as vivid and varied and multitudinous as possible.” The film realizes the composer’s intentions, using groundbreaking technology and brilliant artistry to achieve a visually immersive world that welcomes us in.
